キャンバスを超えた日本画の拡張
Yu Tsurukawa
私は琵琶湖に近い滋賀の田舎を拠点とする日本画家です。
近頃は、モルタルや漆喰をベースに銀箔を用いた作品を制作しています。銀箔の硫黄による化学反応を利用し、その変色具合を調整する事で絵を描いています。さらに銀箔は時と共に硫化を続けます。その箔の上に極薄の和紙を重ねることで、動きと空気感、微妙な立体感が浮かび上がります。
絵画を固定するのではなく、育む媒体として捉えています。
琵琶湖を取り巻く穏やかな農村の風景は、私の制作に深く影響を与えています。比良山系から見ると、地形は静かで穏やかに見え、琵琶湖周辺の田園は堆積物が積み重なって形成されたかのようです。しかし琵琶湖の最深部は100メートルを超える深さがあります。
この目に見える柔らかさと見えない深さの対比に、少なからず影響を受けています。
琵琶湖岸の丸くなった石、水に磨かれたシーグラスならぬ、レイクグラス。そのかつての用途の痕跡や形状に私は思いを馳せています。
ヒビは時間の静かな記録として。
亀裂は蓄積された経験の短い啓示として。
経年劣化に対する肯定的な観点が根底にあります。
近年、この探求をキャンバス外へ拡張し始めました。
高島にある自ら改修した古民家 “然-sikari-“は、私の作品を生活へと拡張する実践の場であり、滞在可能な住居でもあります。室内は茶室を現代的にアップデートし、庭は水や日本庭園をテーマに、駐車場や散水栓など、使用することを前提とした滑れるランドスケープとしてのスケートパークとして少しづつ自らの手で拡張を続けています。
物はいずれ風化し、表面は変わり続けます。—時には金継ぎや箔によって、ひびは隠されることなく、痕跡を残すデザインとしてアップデートしながら。
絵画と空間の両方を通じて、私は時間が痕跡を残す方法——そして私たちがそれらと共にどう生きるのかを探求しています。
I am a Japanese painter based in rural Shiga, near Lake Biwa.
My recent works are created by applying silver foil onto mortar and inducing controlled chemical reactions with sulfur. The surface gradually sulfide, shifting in tone over time. Over this unstable ground, I layer extremely thin washi paper, allowing movement, air, and subtle dimensionality to emerge.
Rather than fixing an image, I cultivate it.
A painting is not completed — it continues to age.
The gentle agricultural landscape surrounding Lake Biwa deeply informs my practice. From a distance, the terrain appears calm and mild, almost as if formed by accumulated water and sediment. Yet beneath the surface lies depth — the lake exceeds 100 meters at its deepest point.
This contrast between visible softness and invisible depth shapes my thinking.
Fragments of stone, lake glass shaped by water, and traces of former use fascinate me. I am drawn to cracks — not as damage, but as quiet records of time. A fissure is a brief revelation of accumulated experience.
Recently, I began extending this inquiry beyond the canvas.
然 -sikari-, a self-renovated traditional house in Takashima, functions as an inhabitable continuation of my practice. Materials weather, surfaces shift, and repair — sometimes through kintsugi — remains visible rather than concealed.
Through both painting and space, I explore how time leaves marks — and how we choose to live with them.
